You’ve heard of it. But have you used this technique before?
What is Rotational Grazing?
Rotational grazing involves moving your cattle from one paddock to the other, often clockwise to let the land rest. This not only “lets the land rest” but lets the biodiversity of the land flourish. The number and size of paddocks can vary. The usual starting point is four sections, rotating the cattle in a clockwise manner on a set schedule. You must have one acre per steer to have rotational grazing.
Here is an example:
What are the Different Types of Rotational Grazing?
The different types of rotational grazing include:
Simple Grazing- This is the traditional way to do rotational grazing. Have a set schedule to rotate cattle into a new area.
Intensive rotational grazing- This type of rotational grazing involves the use of electric fencing in the paddocks and using very small sections for the cattle. The goal is to replenish the land in a short amount of time, while the traditional way may take longer.

Make Sure Your Cattle Have Access to Water
The other thing to think of while using this technique is to make sure your cattle have water! There are several ways of doing this, depending how large of an area you are working with.
My best recommendation is to have troughs of water in each area. To keep a steady pulse on where your water levels are, I would advise a Trough Xtend to each of them. This way, you can monitor each trough, right from the palm of your hand. That’s one less thing you have to worry about while keeping your cattle and land healthy.
